If you follow technology much, you're probably aware that one of the latest buzzes in terms of technology is the touch screen laptop computer. Hewlett Packard was the first major computer manufacturer to really have a significant impact on the number of touch screen laptops on the market.  Tablet computers support touch screen interface and they have been popular for many years with a select niche market.  Hewlett Packard revolutionized the way touch screen laptop computers work by adding multi touch functionality to their TouchSmart touch screen laptop line.

Some things to keep in mind when you are choosing a touch screen laptop are as follows. First you want to make sure that you're not getting caught up in the glamour of simply having a touch screen on your laptop computer. A touch screen on a slow and under powered laptop is like putting a makeup on a pig. No matter how much makeup you put on the pig, it's still just a pig wearing makup.  Before you even try out the touch screen, you should make sure that the system is built to the latest standards.  You want a fast processor, as much RAM as you can afford, as large a hard drive as you can afford, Wi-Fi connectivity, a good optical drive, one or two card readers, plenty of USB ports (make sure at least one of them is powered), a keyboard that is comfortable to type on, good battery run time, and a responsive trackpad.

After you found a laptop that has all of these things is time to try out the touch screen.  You need to make a decision at this point.  If you are going to be using your laptop to use handwriting recognition software which will transcribe your

handwriting into text, you absolutely must buy a touch screen laptop with an active digitizer touchscreen.  An active digitizer touchscreen will only recognize touch input from an electronic stylus.  This is important because when you're writing on the screen your hand will inevitably rub against the touch screen. f you are using a touch screen laptop with a passive digitizer touchscreen, the screen will get confused by your hand resting on it as you write and there will be many errors.

If you will not be using handwriting recognition software and you simply want to be able to manipulate photos and navigate the Internet via touch, a passive digitizer touchscreen is the way to go. Passive digitizer touch screens support multi touch functionality. This means that you will be able to use many of the multi touch gestures that were popularized by the iPhone and iPod touch.  hese include "pinch out to zoom" and "pinch in to shrink" when viewing photographs.

The last thing you may want to consider is the actual touch screen finish. Many people notice that glossy touch screens show more fingerprints than matte finished touch screens. If seeing fingerprints on the touch screen is going to bother you, you should probably choose one that has a matte finish.
